Description

Purpose
Catering to about 20,000 residents of the campus, and several thousands of aspirants every year, the Technology institute’s (IT) infrastructure is among the core engineering services alongside the traditional Civil and Electrical facilities and services. Currently these services are provided by the Computer Centre and the Application Software Centre. Both these centres are headed by faculty members of the Institute. While faculty members have played a key role in since the initial days of ERNET, being the first to try out and implement internet technologies in the country, the current IT scenario in the world and the country is vastly different from the late 1980s. With increasing dependence on IT for all our services, the Technology Institute needs high quality professional support and state of the art technology solutions. It is not in the domain of a faculty member, even from the Computer Science department, to manage the day-to-day affairs of this vast service discipline. The expertise a faculty member may bring in is mostly restricted to the domain of their research, and not sufficiently wide enough for managing solutions on the scale needed by the Technology Institute. Moreover, the time needed for this activity cannot be shared by other commitments of teaching and research of the faculty member.
